I was up in Anchorage last weekend. They offered me the job and it looks like a great deal at first blush, but it is hard to say whether or not I would be ahead of the game or not. You have to figure out what it is going to cost for instance you need certain things, like the Internet and cable tv. I was trying to figure out what I am going to have pay for that sort of thing, looking at site like this one, http://www.cable-tv.com/comcast/alaska/anchorage/ and trying to get a grasp on what it is going to cost for us to live up there. Of course I am think that you are making more money up there because it is going to cost a lot more for a lot of the things that you need. In fact when you think about it Alaska produces a lot of things, like seafood, oil, timber, minerals and so forth. However just about any manufactured goods you buy are going to have to come from a long way off.
In fact every place has stuff from all over the world. You look around your house and you will see a lot of things that were made in China or Germany or in Malaysia and so on and so on. However there are lots and lots of things going to North Carolina or Florida, places where there are tens of millions of people living in relatively compact areas. It is not like that in Alaska. Anchorage is not far from Vancouver or the U.S Northwest, but it is still not close to those places. The rest of Alaska is a very long way from Anchorage and it is very hard to get stuff to where it needs to be up in that part of the world.
